Parenting

For quite some time there have been controversies over how to parent a child with ADHD.  Some people prefer medications, while others prefer to wait it out.  I don't think there will ever be a perfect solution on how to deal with this challenging behavior as a parent.  As a mama with a child who has been clinically diagnosed with ADHD, we did try various medications, all of which had bothersome side effects and left my sweet boy in bed crying because he didn't feel good.  This is what caused me to pursue more natural ways of working through ADHD.

Here are some tricks and tips that I have discovered are critical in working through ADHD in a more natural way with my child:

  • Be consistent with routines and discipline.  We can definitely tell when we are on a schedule that deviates from a "typical" day for us.  Vacations, parties, and holidays can all come in to play and cause you to adjust your plans for the day, but be as consistent as possible on a daily basis.
  • Control of your emotions.  I often found myself getting frustrated at homework time, quiet events, and even in our own house because our son wasn't acting the way I wanted him too.  Instead of controlling him, I needed to control myself.  I'm not saying this is an easy thing to do (especially when all your buttons are being pushed), but you need to do it.  Walk outside.  Listen to music on your Ipod.  Just get away from the situation and get yourself under control.
  • Go out of your way to praise success.  I quickly noticed how much negative attention was being forced at our son because he is ADHD.  I decided to take a different approach and give more praise, ignoring as much as I can with the behavior or attitude I didn't approve of.  Kids need to know you are on their side.  Praise is a great way to show them you are.
  • Keep them physically active.  ADHD kids tend to have a build up of energy.  If you get them outside riding bikes, swimming, running, and playing in sports, you will notice a HUGE improvement.  This gives them somewhere to focus this built up energy and they tend to have better attitudes towards life as well.
  • Watch their diet.  Avoid artificial colors and flavors, and corn syrup and sweeteners.  Use whole grain foods instead of white rice and bread (they are processed foods!).  Give your child every advantage possible nutritionally.
