This was our first year planting a garden. I have previously planted a couple of tomato plants in a topsy-turvy basket and had somewhat success with that. Earlier this past spring I heard about a lasagna garden. I got thinking about it and told my husband, who looked at me as though I had officially lost my mind. Truthfully, I didn't care what he thought. I was going to plant my lasagna garden and something was going to grow.
We spent a good few hours together one spring day laying out newspapers and paper bags on the ground. I had leftover cinder blocks from a previous yard project we had done (thank you Craigslist!) so I decided I would make my garden just large enough that I could use the cinder blocks as my border. We did our layers accordingly as my husband joked about how my beans would grow with a newspaper article to read prior to eating them (thanks honey!).
Here is is now July and my garden has successfully grown. We are enjoying the beans and peas fresh out of the garden. My carrots are doing well and my cabbage is getting hugs. We planted some gords that the kids spotted at the store and although we don't have any evidence of true gords at this point, the vines are sure growing.
If you are looking for an easy garden that doesn't require digging up your yard for next spring, start planning a lasagna garden. Plan which vegetables you would like and watch which areas of your yard get the most (and least) amount of sun. You can start laying your compost layers now, but you will have to add more layers in the spring before you plant.
Happy Gardening!
